crate training adult dog with cats in the house?

I’m just about at the end of my patience with my 7 year old lab/pitbull mix and am thinking about crating him. I know to keep him from getting into things I’m supposed to keep everything out of his reach but it just isn’t possible with him. He has allergies and is constantly on prednisone(steroid) which causes him to be insatiably hungry and very persistent scavenging when we’re not home. I have cats and for the past 3 years I have been struggling with ways to keep him out of their litter, I thought I had found a solution by placing the litter in a closet and putting up a baby gate but he’s realized that he can just knock it over (he’s 90lbs) so that is no longer working. Is it time to crate him? and if i do that will my cats tease him while he’s in the crate?

Probably. But that’s not the end of the world. Crate him in a room where you can close the door so the cats can’t tease him.

I had a cat that would sit on the top of the crate and dangle his tail in to tease my first lab pup. That cat was a stinker. The dog went nuts trying to get his tail. As the pup got bigger, the cat just sat there and smacked the dog on the head with his paw.
