how did you housebreak your dog?

my parents crated our dog up @ night and we put him in a large playpen in the kitchen w/ food, water, and toys. he would usually go pee/poop on the floor, but since we have tile it was easy to clean up. Whenever he went outside we IMMEDIATELY gave him a treat. and if he ever peed inside we cleaned up the mess and ignored him for 10 minutes. This worked like a charm . how did you housebreak your dog?

Excellent for you! It just isn’t rocket science, is it? Patience and consistency.

I would take our pup outside every couple of hours saying “Let’s go outside” and once out there tell her to “go potty”. When she did potty, I would say “good potty” and pet her. I watched like a hawk, and any time she “looked like” she might need to go (circling, sudden distraction from play) I would take her outside. Accidents in the house, I would say “oh oh”, remove her to outside and say “go potty outside”.

She “pees” on command now…and if she doesn’t really need to pee she still gives me a “courtesy squat”!
